1. What do the different catalogs mean?

2. What do the different measurement types mean in DONKI?

  • LE: Leading Edge
  • SH: Shock front
  • RHB: Right hand boundary
  • LHB: Left hand boundary
  • BW: Black/white boundary
  • COR: Prominence Core
  • DIS: Disconnection Front
  • TE: Trailing Edge

In the M2M_CATALOG, the two most common measurement types in DONKI are LE (Leading Edge) and SH (Shock Front). The Leading Edge measurements include the bulk of the CME. The Shock Front measurements including the fainter, typically wider, feature of the CME.

3. What is the “Prime?” Measurement in DONKI?

The “primary” or “prime” flag is either true or false. If there are multiple CME analysis entries for a single CME, this flag would indicate which analysis is considered most accurate per measurement type. There may be more than one measurement marked “True” if there are multiple measurement types.

4. What is the CME Type in DONKI?

The SCORE Scale is a CME Typification System based on speed. The SCORE Scale is as follows:

  • S-type: < 500 km/s
  • C-type (Common): 500-999 km/s
  • O-type (Occasional): 1,000-1,999 km/s
  • R-type (Rare): 2,000-2,999 km/s
  • ER-type (Extremely Rare): > 3,000 km/s

5. How are CME Analysis parameters derived?

In the M2M_CATALOG, the parameters are derived using the NOAA SWPC_CAT and the CCMC StereoCAT tools. These tools are used by space weather forecasters, analysts, and researchers to calculate the kinematic properties of CMEs.
